Friday, April 11, 2008 DAWN KENT News staff writer An Engel Realty Co. investment group has bought a high-profile 274-unit apartment complex in Homewood and plans to spend more than $3 million improving the property, which dates to the late 1960s. The group paid $25.7 million for the Mayfair Chateau Manor, a purchase that closed last week. The complex along U.S. 31 near Lakeshore Drive is easily recognizable for its mansard roofs. The property will retain that French chateau look. Planned interior improvements include upgrades to the kitchens and bathrooms, as well as hardwood floors and French doors. New landscaping also is planned. "This is our home, our city and we know the location," William Butler, Engel's executive vice president, said of the Birmingham-based firm's involvement in the project. "It's a landmark property. To us, it's a trophy." Renovations are expected to last 18 months, and the work will happen around people already living in the apartments. |

TUSCALOOSA | An old trailer park a mile from the University of Alabama could soon be replaced by a neighborhood of high-end Craftsman-style cottages with a historical feel. The 132 homes, planned for the Arlington area off Hargrove Road, will have manicured lawns, sidewalks and trees, a clubhouse, a pool and be in a gated community. But unlike the older neighborhoods nearby, the new development with its single-family homes and duplexes isn't being marketed toward families. Instead, the developers are seeking students. |
